A CrossFit Gym Owner & a Marathon Hobbyist Embark on the Journey of a Lifetime Together
Updated: Nov 22, 2019
Sometimes in life, you come to a crossroads.
Path A: it’s comfortable, predictable, and safe.
Path B: it’s wildly uncomfortable, unpredictable, and terrifying.
Katie and Amanda have decided to go down Path B: a year of training for the 2020 Ironman Arizona.
It’s a remarkable story, but not what you might expect.
We bet you think that these two are the best of friends and have been dreaming of this adventure for years. If so, you would be wrong on both accounts. The fact of the matter is, these women barely know each other, and neither ever planned on doing an Ironman. So how did this year-long partnership and crazy idea come to be?
Amanda took the leap first. She realized her 8-5 desk job wasn’t allowing her to pursue her passions or prioritize her health, and she was craving more freedom and adventure in her life. But what was missing? Someone asked her one day what she has always wanted to do and she surprised herself with her answer. An Ironman. She wasn’t even sure why she said it, but the idea really excited her. This was the thing. She wanted to do it. With the support of her husband Colin, Amanda quit her job (yes, she went ALL-IN), and committed.
In case you don't know exactly what an Ironman is, it's a triathlon consisting of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a marathon 26.22-mile run, raced in that order. It is widely considered one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world. Yes, this is done in a SINGLE DAY. Very few people in the world will ever attempt an Ironman, and even fewer people will actually complete it.
Amanda knew her training plan would be rigorous, so she reached out to Katie and Melissa, the owners of CrossFit Uncaged, to see if they were interested in helping whip Amanda into shape, and also sponsoring her journey. Katie and Melissa were 100% on board and although Katie had never considered doing an Ironman, not even for a moment, the idea excited her too.
“So…what if I did this with you?” Katie proposed. And that’s where it all began.
They may be laughing now…
But for 365 days they are dialing in their nutrition, planning their workouts and scheduling their weeks based on a 52-week training plan for a full Ironman.
With the support of their partners, friends, families, and community, these two almost-strangers are braving a year of unknowns. Training for 6 to 25 hours per week, sometimes solo, sometimes together, will definitely change the relationship between Katie and Amanda. There are going to be ups and downs, good days and bad, but a friendship and deep bond is sure to form along the way.
The hope is that they will inspire others to chase after their wildest dreams. They also hope to spread awareness about the benefits of plant-based eating. That's right, they're doing this ALL as plant-based athletes. More on that later!
Adventures like this are sweaty and scary, but also full of joy. Adventures like this are best done alongside someone who can also go "all-in", throw caution to the wind, and bet on themselves to make it through, no matter what.
They don’t know what to expect from the year ahead, but they hope you follow along.
The only thing predictable about this journey is that there are going to be endless laughs, mishaps, and mistakes along the way.
This story is already pretty interesting, but we will take it a step further by adding a pig into the mix. You will find Bean, Katie and Melissa's pet piggy, oinking around the gym while Katie and Amanda train. We like to think she is cheering them on, but she might just be looking for food.
In conclusion: it’s obviously going to be a very messy (but also very spectacular) year. Follow along.
